Maruyama obtained his MFA in Creative Writing from Long Beach State. He edited an Asian Pacific American Arts journal called dIS*orient Journalzine during the 1990s to early 2000s. He is a member of The Company of Angels Theater's playwriting group. He has most recently been asked to edit a collection of creative writing focusing on Little Tokyo and other APA ethnic enclaves.
